ATS in the Community
Ats Group Kitchen- In Tanzania ATS has developed key suppliers from within the region surrounding the mines operation. We monitor the Health & Safety standards of their businesses and work hand in hand with them as partners. These local traders now supply over 90% of ATS requirements in Tanzania.
- The Nyakabale Agricultural Project, which came into effect June 2001, is a joint venture between ATS, Geita Gold Mine Limited (GGM) and local government agencies. The object of the project was to establish a cash crop that would be sustainable, at the same time as using the primary produce demands of ATS, to produce fresh fruit and vegetables. ATS provides technical expertise and day-to-day management of the project. However, it is owned by the Nyakabale community and ultimately they will control all aspects of managing the project.
- The Geita Project illustrates our commitment and experience in delivering community development plans. At Geita, we committed ourselves to a 4-year program to develop a sustainable co-operative farming project that now produces both cash crops (sold externally) and market garden crops sold to ATS and consumed on the Mine. The farm project has been a huge success and was officially opened by the President of Tanzania.
- In Burkina Faso during 2006, ATS purchased a 2 acre plot, water pump, seeds and employed a farmer to set up a market garden. The project proved to be a great success and we are now using it as a template to train other farmers to set up their own plots on a co-operative basis. The water and custom for the produce is provided by ATS.
